Scribbling in the Sand

This day seems so endless it's warm here in the sun
by the seaside all the kids are busy with their fun
some are building walls around their castles in the sand
pretending that forever their proud empires will stand

Some hoard piles of every shell they find within their reach
others play at choosing teams for games upon the beach
the winners of the games shout out importantly
but all I hear from where I sit is 'look at me, look at me!'

The tide is coming in to wash it all away
soon there'll be no trace of the games we played today

Some kids have made up laws they say you must obey
or else the policeman will come take you away
some have made a church they decorate with golden shells
and if you don't do what you're told they send you straight to hell

Some pretend that everyone is under their command
they march around shouting orders, issuing demands
they say there's an enemy coming to our shore
and that to preserve the peace, we must go to war

But the tide is coming in to wash it all away
soon there'll be no trace of the games we played today

I tire of the other children, go play on my own
build myself a castle and sit upon my throne
when it's time for me to leave I hope I'll understand
I'll look back and laugh at all my scribbling in the sand

For the tide is coming in to wash it all away
soon there'll be no trace of the games we played today
